Designing a kid’s room can become a challenging job when you have so many things to accommodate and very less space to work with.

Actually, no matter how bigger space is, adjusting every item will be a tedious job. Because generally, your space requirements increase with the increase in the square footage of the space.

The design has to be thoughtful because your kid is going to spend his childhood there. It should not only be functional but also inspirational where he can wildly paint his imagination. Also, the place should inspire him to become a better version of himself. In today’s post, I will be discussing a few tips which will help you to design a better space for your child.

STUDY THE SPACE AND FRAME OUT THE REQUIREMENTS

I always focus on framing the requirement first before starting any project. It helps us to understand how much space do we have and what things we can fit in there. This reduces the hassle that you will face while executing the work.

It’s better if you use paper and pencil and draw out your space. Write down everything that you want your children’s room to have.

If it is a twin sharing room or a single room. Whether you want a study zone within that space or not. You want to keep some sort of toy and other things.

By doing this you can understand in what direction you have to work. And it will help you to draw a good layout of your space with proper circulation zone.

Also, it will help you to decide the best furniture for the interior design of your kid’s room.

FURNITURE LAYOUT

A good furniture layout can make the space look bigger and so the vice-versa. So it’s better you invest some time planning your furniture layout before buying any piece of furniture.

Finalize the dimension of the furniture that will be placed in the room, and check if there will be enough room left to breathe after that.

Don’t forget to create a separate seating space in your child’s room. He might be needing that when his friends come over.

SELECTION OF THE FURNITURE

It’s also a very important point to consider. Just don’t buy the furniture you like. Buy only if you find them functional according to your space.

If it’s a twin sharing room, see if there is enough space to keep both the beds’ side by side or you might have to chose bunker bed.

See if there is enough space to keep the study table. If it’s a single sharing room, you can elevate the bed and keep the study beneath it.

By doing this, you will be using your vertical space, which is always good for a small room

CHOOSING THE RIGHT COLOR PALETTE AND PATTERN

Its the most fun part while designing the space and can become challenging, if not properly done. Color palette will differ if you are designing a space for a girl or a boy.

Make sure that you are not choosing a color that will bore your child after some time.

Bold colors on the entire wall are not a good option. It will not only absorb the light and make the room look dull after some time but will also take away the charm of the space.

You can paint one wall with dark color and keep the rest of the walls neutral. You have to keep in mind that you are designing a space for a growing child.

And painting walls again is a tedious job. So think wisely before choosing any color.

You can think of the light color palette and add bold colors and texture in the form of soft furnishing. You will be able to change them whenever you want.

The use of bold pattern can go wrong if you are not deliberate while adding into your kids room interior. Choose something which is not disturbing to the eyes. Remember it’s a place to relax and to learn, not to feel confused and disturbed.

ADD AS MANY STORAGE AS YOU CAN

Organizing your child’s stuff in the room will become a task if you forget to design proper storage for him.

There are so many things that you have to organize. His study books and copies, his toys, his storybooks, his clothes, etc.

The numbers are small but the quantities are huge. An unplanned room will make the room look unorganized and cluttered.

You can use multi-functional furniture like stools with storage space, bed with drawers, study table with storages, etc.

Having proper organization/storage space in a room will not only make the space clean and airy but will also inculcate the organization’s skill in your child.

ADDING SOFT FURNISHING IN THE DECOR

Soft furnishing in the form of cushions, rugs, curtains, soft toys, puffys etc. in any space adds life to space. Your child’s room will be no different. You can play with vibrant colors and textures of your choice.

Be selective about the fabric that you will be using in the room. It should be soft and comfortable and should be easy to clean at the same time.

Kids are like free birds, it will become really a time-consuming job for you to clean if you are not selective about the fabric you choose.

PROPER LIGHTING IN THE SPACE

Good general lighting always creates a positive impact on the individual. Create a good ambiance with sufficient lighting.

Otherwise, the room will become dull and gloomy and so the mood of the individuals staying in the room.

You can use wall lamps, pendant light to enhance the lighting effect, but make sure that it’s not in the approach of the kids. It might lead to some serious problems you won’t want to face.

Lighting has to be sufficient enough to create a readable environment. Not every time kids use a study table to study.

CREATING A READING NOOK

Your child’s room should always have a reading space. It’s a must-have thing. Create shelving for books, school bags, art supplies, etc.

The study table and chair should be according to the height of your child.

It should be comfortable and properly lit. The light should fall from the top.

Use wall light or light attach to the cabinet above the table rather than using table lamps. This will add some more table space.

Design the space keeping the mind, if the child is left-handed or right-handed.

A Pinup board where he can pin his time table, his daily goals, and some other important stuff.

Creating a scribble wall, if a child has just started going to school will be a good idea. You can guide him to write there. This will save the other walls of the house from becoming an unwanted art gallery.

This will inculcate the sense of discipline in the child.
